US Death Penalty Case
Jamie Ryan Weis was charged with killing a woman in February 2006, but has been without legal representation for the past eight months. His execution has been put on hold in the hope that counsel may be provided soon.
Weis' case highlights the financial difficulties that has faced the state public defender system since 2005. Weis filed a court order forcing the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council to sign a contract with two private defense attorneys who had once represented him, but were removed when the system failed to pay them. The attorneys were successfully reinstated in April 2008, but no action has been taken since.
Another difficulty with the case is a new law that requires local counties to share some of the financial burden for death penalty cases.
