How to Join

You can join the Australian Lawyers Alliance by completing a Membership Application and faxing it through to us. Once your application has been approved by the relevant state president, your credit card will be deducted for the applicable amount.

There are four membership categories:

The Australian Lawyers Alliance has introduced a new membership category for legal aid, community legal centre and trade union lawyers with a discounted annual fee of $160.

Full Membership

Full membership is available to a solicitor or barrister admitted to practice in an Australian state or territory; or a person who holds a legal qualification that, subject to admission requirements, would entitle them to be admitted to practice as a solicitor or barrister. Applicants awarded full membership will be those who subscribe to the aims and objectives of the Alliance and who are acknowledged by members of the Alliance as such a practitioner.

The objectives of the Australian Lawyers Alliance include:

  • Promoting access to justice
  • Promoting legal reform that enhances individual rights
  • Upholding the rights of the injured
  • Promoting equality before the law for everyone regardless of wealth, position, sex, age, race, or religious belief

 

Associate Membership

Associate membership is restricted to:

  • Professionals in health, science, engineering, occupational or public safety;
  • Academics who teach courses that are relevant to the aims and objectives of the Alliance ;
  • Elected parliamentarians or persons directly employed by them ;
  • Employees of a government department or state or community legal aid organisation;
  • Articled clerks, law clerks or paralegals who are sympathetic to the objectives of the Alliance ;
  • Students on courses that are relevant to the aims and objectives of the Alliance;
  • Not-for profit employees.

Honorary Membership

Honorary membership is restricted to nominated individuals who have been acknowledged by the National Council as rendering distinguished service to any of the Australian Lawyers Alliance's objectives. An honorary member has all the rights of a full member, other than the right to vote at branch or general meetings. Honorary members are exempt from membership fees.

International Membership

International membership is available to any lawyer or attorney who resides outside Australia, who is admitted to practice in a jurisdiction outside Australia, and who is sympathetic to the objectives of the Alliance.
