Open letter on right to vote for Australians with disability
1 May 2025
The ALA has signed an open letter urging the Prime Minister and the Leader of the Opposition to make a public commitment to protect the rights of people with disability across Australia to vote.
As the open letter details, sections 93(8)(a) and 118(4) of the Commonwealth Electoral Act 1918 (Cth) continue to disproportionately prevent some Australians with cognitive impairments from exercising this fundamental democratic freedom.
In November 2023, the Parliamentary Joint Committee Joint Standing Committee on Electoral Matters recommended that those sections be repealed prior to this year’s election. However, that recommendation has not yet been implemented.
