Safety, regulation and penalties associated with the use of eRideables
15 July 2025
The ALA has made a submission to the Western Australia Parliament's Community Development and Justice Standing Committee (Committee) as part of the Committee's inquiry into the safety, regulation and penalties associated with the use of eRideables. In Western Australia, the term "eRideables" includes eScooters, eSkateboards, hoverboards, eSkates and eUnicycles.
In our submission, the ALA has addressed:
- the current legislative and regulatory landscape regarding eRideables, including our concern about the arbitrary distinction between eRideables and other e-mobility devices (for example, eBikes);
- data collection, safety issues and compliance problems;
- opportunities to educate the public in WA about the safe and responsible use of eRideables and e-mobility devices generally;
- insurance considerations; and
- penalties and enforcement options.
