Endorsement of Sisters Inside Submission for Electoral Laws (Restoring Electoral Fairness) Amendments Bill 2025

The Australian Lawyers Alliance has endorsed the submission of Sisters Inside in response to the Electoral Laws (Restoring Electoral Fairness) Amendment Bill 2025.
Sisters Inside’s submission draws on extensive frontline experience supporting criminalised and incarcerated women and provides detailed evidence about how electoral law settings can operate to exclude vulnerable communities from democratic participation. The submission raises concerns that the Bill’s approach risks further disenfranchisement without a clear evidentiary basis that the proposed changes are necessary or proportionate.
The ALA endorses the key themes of their submission, noting the disproportionate impact this Bill would have upon Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, and its wholly incompatible nature with the Queensland Human Rights Act 2019.
The Justice, Integrity and Community Safety Committee has released its Final Report.
The Committee has recommended that the Bill be passed.
