QLD WorkCover Intensive

Overview

This year's WorkCover intensive will prepare you to face the future of workers’ compensation claims, covering proposed coming to the Workers’ Compensation and Rehabilitation Act and WorkCover Queensland’s return to work program.

A review of psychological injury case law will assist you to advocate for your clients. You will then learn about the construction industry and why injuries are occurring in that industry.

To wrap up the afternoon, you will hear best practice tips on dealing with limitation applications, costs in WCRA/PIPA claims and effectively pursuing claims for your clients.

Registration commences from 1:45pm and there will be light snacks served on arrival, just in case you missed lunch. So be sure to arrive early.

This half-day intensive seminar will sell-out quickly, so register early to avoid disappointment.

Speakers

Greg Spinda
Senior Associate, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

Greg Spinda is an experienced personal injury compensation Senior Associate in Maurice Blackburn’s Brisbane office. He helps people throughout the greater Brisbane area with compensation claims and associated legal advice related to workers’ compensation, road accident compensation and public liability claims.

After graduating with a Bachelor of Laws and Bachelor of Business Management from the Queensland University of Technology, Greg gained experience in a small Queensland firm before joining Maurice Blackburn in December 2017.

Matthew Bannan
Executive Professional Services, WorkCover Queensland

Matthew Bannan is a registered physiotherapist who has worked as a physiotherapist in both the public and private health sectors both in Australia and the United Kingdom.

Matthew has been at WorkCover Queensland for over 12 years, initially as a Physiotherapy Advisor and has subsequently lead teams through various areas of the business including common law, with a strong focus on providing an exceptional customer experience and delivering successful outcomes for injured persons and employers through best practice claims and injury management principles.

He is the executive lead of the Professional Services customer group segment which incorporates the health and community care, education and Government industry sectors.

Dominic Murphy
Barrister, 31 West Chambers

Dominic was called to the Bar in 2002.

Dominic has developed a specialised civil practice exclusively in personal injuries and insurance claims where he acts for both plaintiffs and defendants (including WorkCover Queensland, CTP insurers and public liability insurers).

Prior to his admission to the Bar, Dominic was a solicitor for six years undertaking work in the personal injuries field for both plaintiffs and defendant insurers. In 2004 Dominic partook in a Queensland Bar Association exchange program through which he travelled to the Faculty of Advocates, Edinburgh, Scotland and worked alongside Scottish Advocates acting in civil claims.

Roger Kahler
Principal Consultant, InterSafe

B.E. (Mechanical)(Hons), RPEQ, MISFP, MSIA, MESA

After 13 years as a safety and ergonomic consultant, Roger Kahler has, since 1996, been a director of InterSafe. He has investigated over 5000 accidents in detail for the legal profession, national and multinational companies, involving detailed investigations and reports on those factors essential to accidents and their control, and provided intensive training of industrial management and the workforce of both national and international mining, mineral processing and smelting companies.

For a period of at least 30 years, Roger has completed the following –

  • design courses
  • accident investigation courses (short and long)
  • introducing the world of taxonomies and damage classifications
  • investigated accidents
  • mentored people in the organisation
  • conducted a major study into predicting future electrical incidents
  • accident investigation
  • review OH&S plans.

Kevin Barratt
Special Counsel, Bennett & Philp Lawyers

Kevin Barratt is an accredited Queensland Law Society personal injuries specialist. He recently achieved the enviable distinction of 25 years QLS membership. He has split that time between plaintiff personal injury work and acting for CTP insurers, general insurers, self insurers and WorkCover Queensland.

Kevin draws on his diverse experience and operational knowledge when managing common-law claims for his clients. As a keen cyclist, Kevin has developed a special interest in dealing with legal issues for cyclists. He has first-hand experience of the trepidations cyclists face on a daily basis.
