VIC Leading Women Panel Discussion

Overview

Leading women: empowering women in personal injury law

What does it mean to be a woman practising in personal injury law? How do we support women in climbing the ranks? Why is there an underrepresentation of women in leadership?

The ALA invites you to join our inaugural women’s forum featuring Her Honour Jacinta Forbes (Supreme Court of Victoria), Áine Magee QC (Victorian Bar), Canda Glanville (Principal, Maurice Blackburn) and Sha Hotchin (Branch Manager, Shine Lawyers).

The panel will discuss current issues faced by women in personal injury law including returning to work from parental leave, and achieving equal pay and career pathways. Importantly, discussion will focus on what we can all do to achieve better work conditions for female lawyers in our jurisdiction.

Join the conversation on Wednesday evening at Clarence Professional Offices with registration from 5:30pm; network with your peers over drinks and nibbles. The one-hour panel discussion will follow.

There are 50 seats available, so secure yours early to avoid disappointment.

Speakers

The Honourable Justice Jacinta Forbes
Supreme Court of Victoria

Solicitor in major plaintiff firm for ten years before going to the Bar. Practised predominantly in personal injuries for both plaintiff and defendant clients in Melbourne and on circuit until taking silk in November 2014. As silk, practised in trial and appellate work across a broad spectrum of personal injuries matters and judicial review of various medical panel threshold determinations. Appointed to the Supreme Court Victoria in April 2019 and currently sitting in the common law division.

Áine Magee QC
Greens List

Áine Magee QC was admitted to practice in April 1984. She completed her articles at Coltmans and then worked as a solicitor at Phillips Fox. She was a partner in the insurance litigation and financial services division of Phillips Fox from 1990 until 2000 when she went to the Bar.

She holds a postgraduate diploma in insurance law from the University of Melbourne and is an Accredited Mediator.

She has had three Readers – Leisa Glass, Andrew Newman, Peter Hamilton and is Senior Mentor to Felicity Blair and Andrea De Souza.

She has been a member of the Victorian Bar Council since 2015. She is on numerous committees including the Counsel Committee and the Essoign Club committee.

Since joining the Bar in 2000, she has practised predominantly in the personal injuries area in the Supreme and County Courts and at inquests.

She appears for both plaintiffs and defendants.

At inquests she has appeared for a wide range of parties including families, hospitals, doctors, homeowners, nursing homes, local councils, TAC, APHRA, schools and government departments.

She is currently representing all the families in the Bourke St inquest on a pro bono basis.

Canda Glanville
Principal, Maurice Blackburn Lawyers

Canda Glanville is a Principal Lawyer at Maurice Blackburn Lawyers. Canda leads the Frankston office and has done so since it opened in 2010. Canda is also the Supervising Principal for a number of other Victorian offices and a senior member of the Maurice Blackburn Injuries Leadership Team (South). Canda is a qualified Law Institute of Victoria Personal Injury Accredited Specialist and was the winner of the Law Institute of Victoria Suburban Lawyer of the Year in 2017. Canda’s memberships include the Law Institute of Victoria, the Australian Lawyers Alliance and the Mornington Peninsula Lawyers Association. Canda was the Victorian convenor of Maurice Blackburn’s Women’s Network from 2015 to 2018.

Canda’s leadership skills are in high demand. She is a strong and respectful leader who readily recognises the challenges that face all lawyers who work in personal injury law and in particular women, parents and anyone with responsibilities or interests outside the law. Canda is a champion for flexible work practices, innovation in the work place and women in leadership. Canda has been described as ‘an incredibly inspirational woman and lawyer who always strives for the best possible, for herself, for her team and for her clients’.

When Canda is not being a lawyer or a leader at Maurice Blackburn, you might find her at Kmart (she loves it!) or volunteering at the Peninsula Community Legal Centre or the Frankston Sharks BMX canteen, where her boys, 10, 12 (and 43) compete. Canda has been married for 17 years to Adam, a plumber by trade, who took 5 years away from paid employment to care for their children during ‘work hours’. He has returned to work part time and they are a team, both capable and responsible for packing lunchboxes and washing school jumpers.

Sha Hotchin
Branch Manager, Senior Associate, Shine Lawyers

Sha Hotchin is an Accredited Specialist in Personal Injury Law.

She commenced her legal career working for the Metropolitan Fire and Emergency Services Board. Seeing the devastating impact work injuries had on firefighters, she was very eager to jump into a career in plaintiff personal injury law with a specific focus on WorkCover.

Mum of three under 5, Sha now manages an office at Shine Lawyers in Epping, juggling career with motherhood and everything in between.
