Session 1: Covering all bases; the value of occupational therapy reporting in personal injury matters

An occupational therapist, (OT) may evaluate occupational function from the perspective of a person's self-care, domestic care, emotional, spiritual and psychological wellbeing, sexuality, social engagement, leisure interests, community access, medical needs, equipment needs, home modification and vocational needs. As such, an OT report provides an holistic understanding of barriers and support requirements that may not be recognised in other medical reports.
In this session you will gain an understanding of:
- The holistic role of the occupational therapist
- The value of OT reports for personal injury claims
- How to cover all the bases or add value to claims through objective OT findings
- Examples of recommendations
- Working with an occupational therapist
Session 2: The role of the case manager in catastrophic claims
Presented by: Brett Costello, Managing Director, Network Case Management Services
Case management is generally associated with catastrophic motor vehicle accident claims, but is also increasingly utilised in areas such as workers compensation and the NDIS. The role of the case manager can be key in terms of rehabilitation outcomes as well as navigating complex systems such as ICWA and the NDIS.
In this session you will learn more about:
- The role of the case manager in catastrophic injury as a result of an MVA
- Benefits to client and lawyer in having a case manager on board
- Differences in the approach of 1 July 2016 injuries; private case management
- Workers compensation catastrophic injury
- Compensable clients and the NDIS; how case managers can help

Speakers
Jenny Sammons Jennifer (Jenny) Sammons graduated in 1976 from the Western Australian Institute of Technology (WAIT) with a Bachelor of Science (OT). She received a Rotary Foundation scholarship that enabled her to study overseas and obtained a Master of Advance Science (OT) from the Colorado State University. While paediatrics has long been an area of speciality area, she has always had a strong interest in working with adults with neurological conditions including cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury and spinal conditions. She is currently working with a number of individuals with spinal cord injury in the community, including in country WA. In summary, Jenny’s knowledge of the OT process with a focus on participation and engagement, disability (both physical and/or intellectual), the functional implications and equipment and service needs, provides her a strong background for medico-legal work. |

Brett Costello Brett Costello has been the Managing Director of Network Case Management and Rehabilitation Support Services since the purchase of the business in April 2011. Brett graduated with a BSc Physiotherapy in 1995, working primarily in neurological rehab, aged care and private practice, including with key providers such as Brightwater, Aegis and Royal Perth Hospital. Since then, Brett has moved into management within Health Solutions, mostly around recruitment, staffing and brokerage services, community reintegration, international relocation and high-level business negotiations with major healthcare groups and providers. Brett's background in physiotherapy leads to a special interest in client rehabilitation with a focus on the physical elements of the recovery process. |
