Same-sex marriage is a matter of equality

6th Sep 2017

Equality demands that we all have the right to marry who we choose, the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) said today.

ALA National President Laura Neil said that the principle of individual freedom means that Australian law should guarantee the right to same-sex marriage.

“Legalising same-sex marriage is a matter of basic equality before the law,” Mrs Neil said.

“Equal treatment before the law includes supporting the right of all people to marry who they choose.”

“While some commentary around the issue has become politically polarised, this is essentially a matter of individual freedom,” Mrs Neil said.

“The Australian Lawyers Alliance has always has always dedicated itself to protecting and promoting justice, freedom and the rights of the individual. Marriage equality is a natural fit with that,” Mrs Neil said. “As lawyers we support the right of everyone to be treated equally under the law.”

“Most countries which Australia shares political, economic and social links with have already legalised same-sex marriage,” Mrs Neil said.

“It’s time for Australia to join these nations and give our citizens the choice to marry the person that they choose.”
