The National Disability Insurance Scheme

The Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) advocates for people with disability to have full access to their rights, many of which are laid out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of People with Disability.

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) aims to provide reasonable and necessary supports to people with disability around Australia. It is managed by an independent statutory agency, the National Disability Insurance Agency. The NDIS began with a gradual roll-out on 1 July 2013 and is expected to be fully implemented across Australia by 2019.

It aims to provide reasonable and necessary supports to people with a disability around Australia who meet defined eligibility criteria.

The ALA is actively engaged in the Scheme, advocating to ensure that the roll-out is done at the right pace to meet the needs of participants in the long term. The NDIS will only work if it is fair. We argue that the supports outlined in the NDIS must be accessible and up for review. In addition, participants deserve assistance in navigating the large new bureaucracy that has been created.

We believe that the NDIS is worth doing, and worth doing right.
