Overview
With the Tasmanian government recently announcing its plan to close the Ashley Youth Detention Centre, there is an opportunity for a broader look at how children and youth interact with the justice system. Unlike other states, Tasmania does not have a specialist Children’s Court. When our children and youth attend court they enter the same building as adult clients. Their cases are dealt with by a division of the Magistrates Court. There is no specialist children’s court clinic as is the case in Victoria for example. In addition the Youth Justice Act 1997 is almost 25 years old. Is it time for Tasmania to develop its own specialist court for children and what might new legislation for such a court look like? Our three speakers, all with extensive experience in youth justice and therapeutic jurisprudence, will discuss these issues.
