The Voice - What's Happened & What's next - panel event

Overview

Join the ALA and Holding Redlich for a panel discussion on the campaign for the Voice to Parliament referendum so far and what lies ahead, followed by a networking function. The ALA has organised three panellists bringing different areas of expertise to the discussion:

  • Moderator: Mikaela French is a proud Wagadagum (Mabuiag Island) Torres Strait Islander woman and First Nations ALA member. Mikaela grew up across Far North Queensland and has lived and worked in remote and regional communities. Mikaela holds a Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degree from the Queensland University of Technology and is admitted as a solicitor of the High Court of Australia and the Supreme Court of Queensland. Mikaela draws on her legal experience in Indigenous estate matters (native title, land rights and cultural heritage) to solve complex problems and deliver initiatives which create sustainable social impact and prosperity for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and communities.
  • Dr Josephine Bourne is an academic in Political Science at the University of Queensland, focusing on governance, leadership and organisational development by Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander peoples, and drawing from her professional experiences in this area. She is a mainland Torres Strait Islander, Gumulgal woman of Mabuiag Island through her father’s ancestral line with links to Moa Island and has links to Badu, Mer and Dawar Islands through her mother’s line.
  • Kent Blore is a Deputy Crown Counsel with Crown Law Queensland, with a focus on Constitutional Law. He appears in court in constitutional matters and instructs the Solicitor-General and in-house counsel in the High Court, Queensland Court of Appeal and Supreme Court.
  • Leeonee Thompson has a passion for social policy and has worked in both public and private sector roles in this space. She was a delegate to the Uluru Dialogue in 2017. Leeonee is a Mamu-Waribarra woman from Far North Queensland, and grew up on country in Millaa Millaa and then Tully.
