Headlining this year's conference is former WA Governor Malcolm McCusker AC CVO QC speaking on Addressing Injustice and Dr Tony Buti MLA, Member for Armadale speaking on Law Reform Priorities of the Western Australian Government.

OTHER PROGRAM HIGHLIGHTS

An Update on Institutional Abuse Claims and Laws “Around the Grounds” and National Redress Scheme – with recent changes to the limitation laws, Dr Andrew Morrison RFD QC of Wardell Chambers (NSW) will present a State by State comparison of the changes to the laws and look at the pioneering decisions that are opening up opportunities in the relatively unexplored area of civil litigation for historical abuse victims.

Overseas Workers & Cosmetic Holidays – With increasing globalisation comes an increase of Australians working overseas. Robert McCabe of Albert Wolff Chambers will talk to us about the workers compensation rights of Australians working overseas, applicable to a growing number of Australian workers. We are also seeing an increased number of Australians booking “all-inclusive” cosmetic holidays to save some money on the cost of medical procedures hoping that those savings outweigh the risks. Rob will explore and discuss the legal position of those Australians accepting those risks, and talk about when things don’t go to plan.

Pleadings and the Use of Pre-trial Procedures in Personal Injury Litigation – John Fiocco, Fourth Floor Chambers will discuss the benefits of formal Court-governed requests for information including requests for further and better particulars, and interrogatories, in this “back-to-basics” presentation outlining the importance and value of those increasingly under-utilised pre-trial procedures.

New Techniques in Modern Mediation – Supreme Court Registrar Natalie Whitby shares with us her vast mediation expertise through her experiences as a Supreme Court Registrar.

  • Confiscation of Property - Barrister Edward Greaves will give us a general (practical) overview of how to respond to both the Federal and State authorities when they freeze.
  • His Honour Judge Laurence Levy SC of the District Court will provide an invaluable perspective from the Bench on Jury Directions in Criminal Trials. Judge Levy SC appeared in many leading criminal law cases – both trials and appeals – before his appointment to the Court in 2014. Undoubtedly this session will be of great assistance to those practising in the jurisdiction and of interest to all.

PLUS much, much more including the Annual Case Review
