Welcome referendum date announcement brings Voice one step closer

30th Aug 2023

Today’s announcement of a referendum date is welcome and brings us one step closer to the realisation of a Voice that guarantees the participation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander representatives in national policy and decision-making processes.

“The Voice to Parliament will, unlike many past initiatives, signal legal recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples that goes beyond mere symbolism, and allows for pragmatic change to take place,” said Mr Shaun Marcus, National President, Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA).

On Saturday 14 October 2023, every Australian aged 18 years and above must vote in a national referendum to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in Australia’s Constitution through the establishment of an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice.

“We are hopeful that Australians see this referendum as an opportunity to embrace positive reform that will result in better policies and better outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, rather than a political issue,” said Mr Marcus.

The ALA considers that the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice proposal, which has its origins in the Uluru Statement from the Heart, is moderate, pragmatic and legally sound.

“Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples should have a say in the laws and policies that affect their lives,” said Mr Marcus. “Our legal system has often failed to adequately represent Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, but we know that the law can be used effectively to create a more just and equitable society.

“The Voice will improve social cohesion by providing Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples with a permanent avenue for advising government, ensuring that the best possible legislation, policies and programs will emerge. This is the roadmap to closing the gap.”
