Our VIC conference to take place this Friday in Torquay

13th May 2014

The annual Australian Lawyers Alliance VIC State Conference returns to Torquay in 2014 on Friday May 16 and Saturday May 17 at Peppers the Sands Resort.

The Australian Lawyers Alliance’s highly sought out Victorian Civil Justice Award 2014 will be presented to this year's outstanding recipient, to be announced in the evening of May 16.

Julian Burnside AO QC, pre-eminent refugee and human rights advocate, will deliver the much-anticipated keynote address on asylum seeker policy in Australia.

Judge Robert Dyer and Magistrate Simon Garnett will provide insight into current trends in litigation before the County and Magistrates’ Courts.

Recent legal changes to the rights of Victorians injured on the roads, which were rushed through without consultation, will be examined by ALA National President Geraldine Collins in a panel discussion.

Changes to the law regarding workers injured in Victoria will also be on the program. However, extensive stakeholder consultation ensured that the WorkCover legislative review did not result in curtailment of benefits and rights.

This year’s program will include comprehensive briefings on these developments, as well as sessions on important recent case law, Law Aid and the current status of the National Disability Insurance Scheme. ALA National President-Elect Andrew Stone of the NSW Bar also returns by popular demand to present his thought-provoking and entertaining hypothetical ethics session.

The event will attract around 200 legal professionals. The program for the event can be accessed here. Further details about the event can be accessed on our website.
