SSM laws a momentous moment for equality in Australia

8th Dec 2017

The new law legalising same-sex marriage in Australia marks a watershed moment for individual rights and freedom before the law, the Australian Lawyers Alliance (ALA) said today.

The Australian Parliament yesterday passed a Bill legalising same-sex marriage, which was signed into law by the Governor-General this morning. The first same-sex weddings will be able to happen from January 9.

ALA National President and barrister Laura Neil said that the passing of same-sex marriage legislation was an historic moment for individual freedoms in Australia.

“The legalisation of same-sex marriage in Australia is a wonderful reassertion of humanity and equality before the law for Australia, Australians, and the LGBTIQ community in particular,” Mrs Neil said.

“It’s a win for the people of Australia, who overwhelmingly backed the change towards marriage equality.”

“Legalising same-sex marriage is a matter of basic equality before the law,” Mrs Neil said.

“This is essentially a matter of individual freedom. The Australian Lawyers Alliance has always dedicated itself to protecting and promoting justice, freedom and the rights of the individual. Marriage equality is a natural fit with that,” Mrs Neil said.
