Freedom of information applications

The Australian Lawyers Alliance regularly applies under freedom of information laws to obtain further information from federal government agencies about issues affecting individuals' rights. 

2017

In June 2017, we applied under freedom of information laws for compensation amounts paid out for the 2016-17 financial year in relation to claims made by asylum seekers arising from wrongful detention, personal injury in detention, and by staff/contractors for personal injury, broken down by country in which the facts giving rise to the claim occurred.

2016

In 2016, the Australian Lawyers Alliance released its ground-breaking report on abuses, injuries and illnesses in immigration detention and the Work Health and Safety Act 2011 (Cth). It relied on information gathered under freedom of information requests gathered over two years. All of the documents received can be found here.

In 2015, the Australian Lawyers Alliance has applied under freedom of information laws for the release of information from Comcare in relation to incidents reported by the Department of Immigration and Border Protection, and correspondence sent by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

In 2014, the Australian Lawyers Alliance has applied seven times under freedom of information laws for the release of information from federal government agencies on a wide range of policy issues affecting individuals' rights, including asylum seekers, the National Injury Insurance Scheme, transboundary damage and human rights and the Montara oil spill.
