Birth trauma

6th Sep 2023

NEW SOUTH WALES

The Medical Law Special Interest Group and the NSW Branch Committee made a submission in August 2023 to the NSW Parliament’s Select Committee on Birth Trauma, which the ALA is now authorised to publish.

In our submission, the ALA addresses:

  • the prevalence of birth trauma and its impacts, including nine de-identified case studies of clients represented by ALA members in NSW;
  • the underlying causes and factors contributing to birth trauma; and
  • the ALA’s recommendations for reform to ensure that trauma-informed and culturally-appropriate care is provided for women giving birth and for their support networks across NSW.

The Select Committee on Birth Trauma received over 4,000 submissions and is due to report by 1 February 2024.
