NATIONAL

The ALA has made a submission to the Joint Select Committee on the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice Referendum regarding the Constitution Alteration (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice) 2023.

This is the proposed legislation which would, should this year’s referendum succeed, amend the Constitution to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the First Peoples of Australia by establishing an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Voice. The ALA has determined that the provisions within this legislation are legally sound, well-drafted and appropriate.

We are grateful to Professor Asmi Wood, member of the Government’s Constitutional Experts Group and also an ALA member, for contributing to and reviewing the ALA’s submission.
