Inquiry into the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic)

27th Feb 2024

VICTORIA

The ALA has now been authorised to publish a submission we made to the Victorian Parliament’s Integrity and Oversight Committee (‘Committee’) regarding the Freedom of Information Act 1982 (Vic).

Our submission was endorsed by the Victorian Aboriginal Legal Service, Youthlaw, and Inner Melbourne Community Legal’s Police Accountability Project.

In this submission, the ALA addresses issues ALA members have faced making Freedom of Information requests in Victoria in relation to:

  • abuse claims;
  • Victoria police;
  • criminal law and justice, including accessing prisoners’ health records;
  • local councils;
  • the Emergency Services Telecommunications Authority; and
  • medical negligence claims.

The Committee has invited ALA members to appear at a public hearing next month to speak further on the issues raised by the ALA. The Committee will hand down its final report by 30 June 2024.
