Path to Treaty Bill 2023

5th Apr 2023

QUEENSLAND

The ALA has collaborated on a submission with ANTAR (National) and ANTaR Queensland to the Queensland Parliament’s Community Support and Services Committee regarding the Path to Treaty Bill 2023 (Bill).

The purpose of this Bill is to establish foundational legislation to drive the Path to Treaty, including the formation of:

  • a First Nations Treaty Institute to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in preparing for treaty negotiations with the Queensland Government; and
  • a Truth-telling and Healing Inquiry to inquire into and report on the effects of colonisation on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

In this submission, ALA, ANTAR and ANTaR Queensland have proposed a substantial number of amendments to the Bill and the accompanying Path to Treaty processes that will foster greater and more accessible consultation with First Nations peoples across Queensland, and ensure that the Path to Treaty process is transparent, culturally-safe, responsive and leads to tangible, long-term legal and policy changes.
