NEW SOUTH WALES

The ALA has been authorised to publish a submission made by our Medical Law Special Interest Group and NSW Branch Committee in September 2023 to the Legislative Assembly Select Committee on Remote, Rural and Regional Health (‘Select Committee’). The Select Committee is reviewing the implementation of the recommendations made in the Legislative Council Portfolio Committee No. 2 report (May 2022) specifically regarding workforce issues and workplace culture, as well as looking at funding considerations for remote, rural and regional health.

The ALA’s submission reflects on:

  • the impact a lack of public health data has on analysing the state of healthcare in remote, rural and regional parts of NSW;
  • staffing and workforce issues in remote, rural and regional NSW health districts;
  • the ALA’s support for comprehensive cultural competency training for all medical professionals in NSW in response to reports of a culturally unsafe workplace culture within healthcare workplaces in NSW, which is contributing to poor health outcomes for patients; and
  • our support for financial incentives that account for remoteness and the increased responsibility of remote, rural and regional healthcare providers, in order to attract people to work in those parts of NSW.
